Yoga To Improve Digestion

I wanted to share this Yoga video that can support and hopefully improving digestion. Right now, we are challenged with the fear of a virus and locked down. It is a devastating time right now, many people all over the world are affected because of the information. I am sure that there are more effects than I may even begin to list here that we are struggling with, fear being possibly one of the biggest along with powerlessness.


Our digestion is connected to our feelings considerably, and with the amount of stress we are under the sympathetic nervous system may be running over time. We can end up moving into fight and flight response; this releases energy that helps us deal with danger. When this happens, it affects the body and mind in many ways, the digestion being an affected area, and it may become blocked, bloated and tense, which can results in constipation and other symptoms.


"People who are afraid to let go, either of their material belongings or of their feelings, are prone to obstruction in their lower gastrointestinal tract. It is all too common that bound emotions or squelching feelings burrow into the lower spine and pelvis, causing both musculoskeletal and visceral knots." Tias Little




When we work with the digestion, we work with the lower energy centres that connect us to the earth plane and Gaia. Our second chakra governs the digestion (colon) and is known as the Svadisthana.


Finding ways to bring balance back into this energy centre is essential for the health of the body and mind. When this energy centre is blocked and unbalanced, the following may be experienced:

  • Oversensitive

  • Fearful

  • Sense pleasure

  • Reassurance

  • Self-indulgent

  • Feelings of being unworthy

  • Unconfident


Physically the body may suffer from difficulties such as:


  • Constipation

  • Kidney or bladder problems

  • lower back pain

  • Impotence

  • Ovarian cysts

  • Fibroids

  • Prostate problems

Using Yoga to improve digestion is so beneficial right now, the Yoga poses selected are tailored to encourage balance and hopefully unblock energy stuck in the sacral chakra. The Yoga poses chosen are specifically to improve digestion. We work gently and slowly through the Yoga poses that will hopefully allow the Apana force (downward energy) to work more effectively.


In the Yoga session, we work closely with the breath to move us into the parasympathetic nervous system which will encourage the digestion to work much better, the mind to get calmer and the body to release tension and stress. If you know me already you know that all my sessions connect to the breath!


As you work through the Yoga for the digestive system allow yourself to be slow and present, when a thought arises, be mindful of the thought that arrives and then see if you can gently release it away and come back into the body and breath. This Yoga for digestion is suitable for everyone; tailored so everyone can do it at any time.


When we begin to feel more balanced within this energy centre, you may start to feel more creative, optimistic, imaginative, healthy body image, sensual, hopeful and less congested in the colon.


I list below a few other things that may be helpful, including several oils and gems that can also work to help the balancing of the sacral chakra, encouraging better digestion:


Oils: Cypress, Myrrh, Cedarwood and Lavender.

Gems: Agate, Hematite, Bloodstone, Ruby and Smoky quartz
